Welcome to Maui Economic Recovery Commission

Welcome to the Maui Economic Recovery Commission (ERC), a dynamic coalition of community leaders dedicated to shaping a brighter economic future for Maui and Hawai‘i. Launched in January, the ERC brings together influential stakeholders from various sectors to collaborate, innovate, and uplift Maui after the challenges posed by the 2023 fires.  The ERC has now evolved into a Maui-led group and its implementation phase.

Overview of 11 ERC Projects across 6 Focus Areas

The Maui ERC is the joint State-County Economic Recovery Support Function (RSF) in the National Disaster Recovery Framework. This group is comprised of 100+ members focused on building foundations, bringing focus, and taking action. ERC members participated in a new collaborative format to develop sustainable business practices and enduring relationships as they learned, brainstormed, conceptualized, actualized, and aspired with each other through in-person and weekly virtual meetings from early January through mid-September 2024. The ERC is now in its project implementation phase.

ERC Projects included in the County Long-Term Recovery Plan

The ERC has now evolved into a Maui-led group and into its implementation phase.  Please see the box on the right for the 11 ERC projects that continue to move forward led by project teams.  You can find more ERC history below the projects. These ERC projects are community-identified and led collaborations that overlap, complement, and amplify many of the County's long-term recovery initiatives and that have support from diverse stakeholders - the State looks forward to deploying its resources to accelerate these vital plans.

Key Highlights

ERC members share from the ERC process:

  • The opportunity to get to know and work with others, who they normally would not meet, in meaningful ways
  • A new way of doing business together for shared goals: Time to build foundations and relationships, to learn, and to think broadly about what Maui needs for long-term recovery has been really appreciated and is crucial for real impact
  • Witnessing a de-siloing of government (across levels) and experiencing working with agencies and across sectors provides hope

ERC Origin Story

Comprised of influential community leaders spanning business, culture, economics, nonprofits and workforce development, the Maui Economic Recovery Commission (ERC) embodies the spirit of collaboration and service. Originally sponsored by the State of Hawai‘i Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism (DBEDT) and co-chaired by DBEDT Director Jimmy Tokioka and County of Maui Office of Economic Development (OED) Director Luana Mahi, the ERC was facilitated by a team from One Shared Future. This dynamic coalition aim has always been to collaboratively uplift Maui after the challenges of the 2023 fires through recommendations, proposals, and projects for County of Maui to maximize federal funding and community support.

Our Vision

Keep local people home
Steer hope
Rebuild our economy so that local people can return home

Journey of Discovery

Embarking on a journey of discovery and collaboration, the ERC’s initial phase involves learning, listening, and exchanging insights. From late January through April, our facilitated Zoom meetings will serve as spaces for diverse perspectives to converge, fostering understanding and shared learnings.

Our Mission

At its core, the ERC is dedicated to fostering inclusivity, ensuring every voice is heard and valued. Our collective purpose revolves around generating recommendations that drive Maui’s economic resurgence while empowering local residents to shape their community’s recovery. Our mission is clear:

115 participants in person

Forge a resilient path for Lahaina’s and Kula’s economic recovery

Advocate for deserved outcomes through policies and regulations

Unite our community towards a common goal
